SCA VOLUNTEER CHECK IN AT GATE

White entrance booth at Fort Knox park (copyright Lady Bryn Millar)The Friends of Fort Knox have graciously waived park entrance fees for SCA volunteers participating in the medieval tournament. Please have your garb at hand and tell the park ranger at the white entrance booth that you are a SCA volunteer.

Separate admission fees apply for anyone wishing to visit the Observatory.

PARKING NOTICE

After entering the parking lot you can turn left to drop off your gear at the circle near the Visitor Center (red brick building). Once unloaded please park your vehicle in the auxiliary parking lot next to the old bridge (within easy walking distance of the fort). There is a shuttle service running between the fort and auxiliary parking areas. Inside the fort grounds you must sign in at the SCA gate table (troll) near the front gate entrance to complete SCA waivers and to receive your dayboard token.

Please use the Fort's main parking area for loading/unloading only. A limited number of vehicles may be permitted onto the main site early in the morning to unload items. All vehicles must be moved to parking lots just prior to 9:00 AM.  Please contact Lord Finan if you need to bring items directly on site after 9:00 AM.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR SCA VOLUNTEERS

  • Facilities & Handicap Accessibility: There are handicap accessible flush toilets and drinking water fountains  located in a separate white building near the Gift Shop & Visitor Center. There are no shower facilities. The fort has limited handicap accessibility to the central courtyard area via a ramp through the main gates. Some parts of the fort will not be readily accessible without minor assistance - please do not hesitate to ask for help. The Gift Shop & Visitor Center will be open.

  • Clothing: To create a medieval atmosphere for the Fort Knox Medieval Tournament demo for the pleasure of the general public, please wear pre-17th century clothing. Please contact your local SCA Chatelaine or members of your local SCA group if you need assistance finding appropriate garb for the day.

  • Dayboard: SCA volunteers can enjoy a light lunch. It is expected that you will bring your own sturdy bowl, plate, drinking cup, utensils and napkins. Please plan to bring a bowl that makes it easy for you to carry hot soup once served. There are no facilities to wash dishes after use so one strategy is to bring a plastic bag to store your dishware after lunch. The Shire of Endewearde and the Fort Knox staff would deeply appreciate that you do not wash dishes or dump food waste in the public restrooms. One useful tip is to bring a paper plate to place over your sturdier plate; the paper plate is discarded after your meal and you pack a relatively clean plate.

  • Keep Warm, Be Comfortable: You will want to wear footwear meant for walking, fencing or fighting on gravel, dirt & wood floors, or granite flooring. You may wish to consider bringing a warm cloak  -- although the temperatures may be pleasantly warm during the day of the demo, the wind off the Penobscot river can be quite chilly in early September.

  • Site Information: The Fort Knox and Penobscot Narrows Observatory website link at http://fortknox.maineguide.com/ has additional information about the history of the fort as well as a downloadable brochure (pdf format). Separate admission fees are charged for entrance to the Park and to the Observatory.
