About Your Day
We welcome you to the Middle Ages! But we also recommend a few modern things for you to have the most pleasant day!
- Bring a picnic lunch or snack and plenty of water - while there is a beverage machine on site, there is no food vendor
- Pack a traveling chair or blanket to sit on
- Wear sturdy and comfortable shoes, as the Fort grounds can be hard to get around on
- Bring a flashlight if you're thinking of exploring
- Bring a warm sweater (it gets cool in the gun bays!)
- Wear a nice hat and some sunscreen
You will see lots of interesting things (we're sure of it!) and we want you to know that if you see something and want to know more about it, just ask someone who "looks medieval" and they'll either answer your questions or help you find someone who can!
You'll meet people from all over Maine - we have four official Society of Creative Anachronism groups in the state. We will happily direct you to the appropriate folks for your area if you are interested in joining in our activities! We love new folks to play with!
About the SCA in Maine
The Society for Creative Anachronism has thousands of members all over the world. Our events can be small, just a few people for an afternoon archery shoot, or can be vast and gigantic, like the Pennsic War which hosts over 12,000 people for two weeks every August.
There are probably SCA members who live close to where you are. Below is a map of the Lands of the SCA in Maine.

Directions to Fort Knox:
From all points via I-95.
Get to Bangor via I-95; take Brewer exit 182A (182B from the North). Take exit 4 toward Route 15; stay to the left of the Y, and take a left at the lights. Follow Route 15 for apx. 17.5 miles. You will enter Bucksport and go through the downtown/main street. Turn right onto Bridge Street (it's literally |a bridge, so it's hard to miss) and travel .9 miles on ME-3/US-1. You will go over a large bridge - you will see the fort from the bridge to your right. After crossing the bridge, take a right at Fort Knox Road/ME-174 E. You will see the Fort parking area.
Here are some things you may see at the Fort Knox demo... (Thank you to Genevieve Coombs for the lovely photos of the 2008 demo.)
There are fighters in a tournament, called the Pas d'Armes.
