By the Watch Tower

I wrote this song during Pennsic XXXIII after watching Una, a dear friend, wait for her husband, Murt, to return from the day's Castle Battle. She stood near our camp's "wash tower" and peared nervously up the road most of the afternoon.
See yonder fair maiden o'er by the watch tower.
Her husband's return she waits for today.
He fights his King's battle while she counts the hours
And misses him dearly since he went away.
She remembers the day they met by the watch tower.
Their lives were so blessed, their love was so grand.
But the King's call to arms, to glory and honor,
Took her brave lord away with a sword in his hand.
See those tired warriors pass by the watch tower.
She searches their ranks for the man that she wed.
She fights back the worry that turns her heart sour;
The fear that her husband lies broken and dead.
Oh see the sun setting beyond the watch tower.
She turns to retire for another long night.
She pauses a moment, her heart filled with sorrow,
She will return with the morning's first light.
See yonder fair maiden o'er by the watch tower.
Her husband's return she waits for today.
He fights his King's battle while she counts the hours
And misses him dearly since he went away.
